Since 2012, Marco Vitale has been responsible for the lighting design of over eighty new productions in the fields of theater, opera, musicals, and ballet. In doing so, he has collaborated with choreographers such as Itzik Galili, Douglas Lee, Edward Clug, Maurice Causey, Angel Rodriguez, Cayetano Soto, Dominique Dumais, Valentina Turcu, Stephen Shropshire, Georg Reischl, Ricardo Fernando, Lillian Stillwell, and Peter Chu. He was also shaped by his work with directors such as Anne Lenk, Markus Trabusch, Maria Viktoria Linke, Bernadette Sonnbichler, André Bücker, David Ortmann, Dirk Schmeding, Roland Schwab, Roman Hovenbitzer, Cusch Jung, Falk Richter, Sebastian Baumgarten, Gaines Hall, Armin Petras, Nora Bussenius, and Antje Schupp.

Starting in 2019, he was engaged as lighting master and resident lighting designer at the Maxim Gorki Theater Berlin. In addition, he has been working throughout Europe as a lecturer and trainer for digital lighting design with Capture Visualisation since 2016.

In May 2021, he returned to his hometown as head of the lighting department at the Augsburg State Theater. Since his return, he has created the lighting design for numerous other successful productions at the theater. These include, among others, the acclaimed staging of the musical Chicago on the open-air stage at the Rotes Tor, the opera productions Angel’s Bone and Peter Grimes, as well as large-scale dance and choral projects such as the Mozart Requiem. With his multi-layered lighting designs, he continues to play a key role in shaping the visual identity of many productions at the Staatstheater. In addition, he has enjoyed success as a freelance lighting designer at other renowned theaters, creating the visual worlds for Die Entführung aus dem Serail at the Saarländisches Staatstheater and the opera double bill of Rosse and Pagliacci, among other projects.
