The season’s final chamber concert brings together a very special ensemble—featuring flute, piano, and a percussion quartet—at the Kleines Haus. For André Jolivet (1905–1974), who sought through his music “to reestablish contact with primal nature and the magical forces of the human soul,” the archaic instruments of the flute and percussion played a very special role. The flute, according to Jolivet, is “the musical instrument par excellence, because it is animated by the breath, a profound expression of humanity.” A concert full of magic that juxtaposes Jolivet’s poignant Incantations for solo flute, the Suite en concert, and the famous Chant de Linos with other sonically powerful works by contemporary composers Dimos Stephanidis, Gene Koshinski, and Steve Reich.
