Grimms' journeys
from 10 years
“Once upon a time, when wishes still came true…”
Jacob (1785-1863) and Wilhelm Grimm (1786-1859) are known worldwide for their collection of folk tales. The collection was published between 1812 and 1815 as children’s fairy tales. It also counts as the first written collection of fairy tales in Germany. Prior to the publication of Grimms' collection, fairy tales had been passed on to next generations by story tellers only.
The journeys of the Grimm brothers also led them close to Würzburg. That is why the character Snow White, one of the most popular protagonists in the collection, is said to have been inspired by a young girl who once lived in Lohr am Main. Various characters of the collection have developed into archetypes over time and they are referred to in many different contexts.
Grimms' journeys looks closely at what has kept the collection appealing and interesting until today. The different scenes of the piece are inspired by the original tales and the performance brings beloved characters of Grimms' fairy tales to life. You will not only recognize the fairy tale Snow White, but also Rapunzel or Cinderella for example.
Dominique Dumais, Director of Ballet and Chief Choreographer, created the piece together with guest choreographer Wubkje Kuindersma. Both choreographers deep dive into the world of fairy tales: They connect Grimms' life and work by channelling their own fantasy and by implementing a good amount of playfulness; still, they look under the surface to create a moving journey full of discoveries.
