It is not without reason that Joseph Haydn is considered the “father of the string quartet.” With his approximately 80 works, he helped bring the genre to great renown. His Opus 76, the final string quartet series, ranks among the great highlights of his oeuvre and includes some of his most beautiful and beloved pieces, such as the Quintet, the “Emperor” Quartet, and the untitled No. 1.
With Mozart’s only oboe quartet, K. 370, and Jean Françaix’s rarely heard quartet for English horn and string trio, the possibilities of this genre are expanded to include the sound of the oboe and the English horn, respectively. While Mozart’s oboe quartet captivates with its sunny lightness and joie de vivre, the French composer Jean Françaix enriches the program with humorous jazz motifs.
With his Novelletten for string quartet, composed in 1904, the British composer Frank Bridge created three colorful character pieces that draw on the English tradition shaped by Henry Purcell.
